What is the importance of properly filing a commercial insurance claim?
Many business or corporate owners who own commercial property may find themselves dealing with property damage with their properties. The property damage may be damage caused by fire, flood, wind (like from a hurricane), and even a simple accident such as a fallen object. Most corporate or business owners will usually carry some form of property insurance in case a property damage claim needs to be filed with the insurance company. Of course, the policy must provide the coverage necessary to cover the property damage caused. So, it is important to obtain the most extensive policy one can purchase (and afford) to sufficiently protect the business or corporate owner in case he/she/it needs to file a property damage claim. In fact, when one thinks of property damage claims and the necessary property insurance coverage needed to pay out such claims, it is usually property damage emanating from a home or residence. Yet, despite the perceived strength of commercial property, commercial property can be damaged, necessitating sufficient property insurance coverage to cover any property damage claim.
Here is a story that occurred to one of our clients. Our client owned a very large commercial property. The commercial property had its own septic tank. Sadly, a landscaping company working on an adjacent commercial property decided to park its heavy vehicles on our client’s commercial property, specifically on the septic tank even after they warned not to do so. Sadly, the vehicle damaged the septic tank, which shut down the entire plumbing system in the building. In this particular instance, one of our attorneys at SG Law Group decided to file a claim against the landscaping company’s auto insurance for the property damage sustained. The attorney at SG Law Group submitted a property damage claim to the auto insurance company. While it was not a property insurance policy, it was damage caused by the vehicles being on the septic tank and, therefore in our attorney’s opinion, there should be coverage from the insurance company for the property damage. This is just one of many examples of how businesses or corporate owners can have property damage on their commercial property, and how our attorneys will do what it takes to adequately protect our clients’ interests.
